Thu, 11 Sep 2008 15:09:13 GMT http://www.firehousesolutions.com/demo/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=71 School Bus Accident in Helen Sends 37 to the Hospital http://www.firehousesolutions.com/demo/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=20 On March 5, 2008 at 1502 hours Station 2 and EMS Stations 29 & 19 were alerted for a motor vehicle collision on Doctor Johnson Road at Blossom Drive in Helen. Initial reports indicated that the accident involved a passenger car and a school bus with possibly one injured. Captain-2A (Pullium) was in the area and went on the scene. He immediately confirmed one vehicle and a school bus, which was occupied. Rescue Squad-2 and the Fire Chief arrived at 1509. Chief 2 established the Helen command. The Squad crew quickly went to work and begin stabilizing the bus since the rear axle had been knocked almost completely out from under it. Air bags and box cribbing were placed in strategic areas under the bus to secure it, allowing EMS providers to assess the patients onboard. Upon further size-up and triage, some of the students on the bus were complaining of various injuries. This brought additional EMS units to the scene, to include EMS Stations 59 & 79 along with an additional bus from the St. Mary's Board of Education. After conversing with EMS personnel it was decided that all patients would be transported to the hospital instead of being turned over to the Board of Education representative that was on scene. A total of 37 patients were transported to St. Mary's Hospital by various ambulances and the additional school bus. Students complaining of minor injuries were transported by the additional bus. This incident was quickly mitigated due to a combined effort of the Fire/EMS crews that were on the scene. The Mechanicsville V.F.D. would like to thank those crews involved. Sat, 02 Sep 2006 11:56:39 GMT http://www.firehousesolutions.com/demo/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=57 Sixth Alarm Fire Devastates Front Street http://www.firehousesolutions.com/demo/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=44 The quiet summer night was shattered on Saturday when the Philipsburg Fire Department was alerted for a building fire with possible entrapment on the 100 block of North Front Street in downtown Philipsburg. Assistant Department Chief Tim Townsend arrived on scene and advised heavy fire showing from Side C of the building and requested the box upgraded to a second alarm. Chief Townsend assumed command and while assessing the scene, by-standers advised tenants were unaccounted for and screaming could be heard emanating from the second floor apartments. Chief Townsend requested the first-in truck crews from Reliance Fire Company to gain access from the Front Street side (Side A) to begin search and rescue operations. As the first alarm units arrived on scene and went to work, Chief Townsend requested a third alarm with additional truck companies. As the fire raged into the night sky, the heat and high humidity began to take its toll on the interior crews. Incident Command was notified of a fire fighter down on Front Street. EMS was contacted to report to Side A when moments later a call went out for a second fire fighter down. With building conditions rapidly deteriorating, Incident Command requested all interior crews to vacate for PAR. A priority radio message went out from the Side C Officer that PAR was not met and there was possibly a fire fighter down inside the fire building. A RIT crew was activated to begin a search and rescue. After Incident Command confirmed the name of the missing fire fighter, it was determined the missing man was one of the fire fighters who succumbed to the heat and humidity. With all fire fighters accounted for, the attack switched to exterior operations. The blaze eventually went to six alarms before the fire was declared under control. Five fire fighters were transported to Philipsburg Area Hospital for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion. All fire fighters were treated and released. One apartment resident suffered smoke inhalation and a second resident suffered burns to the face. The residents were also treated and released at the Philipsburg Area Hospital. The blaze damaged seven businesses and about 30 apartments on Front and Presqueisle Streets. Twelve families were left homeless. A total of 24 fire companies and 4 ambulance companies responded to the 57-11 fire box.
